Samsung’s next flagship SoC is promised to bring significant upgrades, but with a confusing naming scheme. The Exynos 990 is a rebranded successor to the Exynos 9820 and Exynos 9825 with integrated 5G. It has a new GPU, support for 120Hz displays, and several performance improvements.

The Exynos 990 is made using the 7nm EUV process just as Huawei’s Kirin 990 SoC. It has eight cores with a tri-cluster CPU configuration. This will include two high-end custom cores, two additional high power Cortex A76 cores, and finally, a quad-cluster of Cortex A55 cores for power efficiency. These are promised to bring an overall performance improvement of 20%.

Samsung hasn’t mentioned the clock speeds of these cores yet.

The new GPU is called  Mali-G77 MP11. It will be replacing the Mali-G76 MP12 GPU with performance and power efficiency improvements by up to 20%.

It features changes in the Digital Singal Processor (DSP), which works alongside the dual-core NPU for better camera performance. The company claims that it can now process over ten-trillion operations per second, how that translates to real life is yet to be seen.

Speaking of the NPU, it now enables localized AI to process data on the device without relying on external networks or servers. This should, in theory, result in face recognition and scene detection improvements.

It also features a new 5G modem codenamed “5123”, that can reach up to 3Gbps downlink on LTE networks. As for 5G, it can reach download speeds of up to 5.1 Gbps on sub-6 GHz and 7.35 Gbps in mmWave.

The Exynos 990 supports 8K UHD video decoding at 30 FPS, memory bandwidth of up to LPDDR5, 120Hz screen refresh rates, and cameras with 108MP resolutions.

Samsung’s new chipset is expected to go into mass production by the end of this year, which means that it is very likely to power the Galaxy S11.
